Most of what we fabricate ends up in a kitchen or bathroom, but granite’s density and weather resistance make it just as suited to permanent outdoor installations, which is exactly why it’s the standard material for monuments and commemorative stonework. For this project, we fabricated a custom granite monument for Washington State University in Pullman, on the opposite side of the state from our Everett shop.
Why Granite for a Monument
An outdoor monument has to survive decades of freeze-thaw cycles, direct sun, and Eastern Washington’s wider temperature swings without cracking, fading, or losing its finish. Granite is one of the hardest commercially available stones and essentially impervious to water absorption once properly finished, which is why it’s been the standard choice for monuments and memorials for as long as stone has been carved.
Precision Fabrication for a One-Off Piece
Monument work is a different discipline from countertop fabrication. There’s no repeat template, and the finished piece is the entire deliverable rather than one of several surfaces in a room. We used our in-house waterjet precision to cut and finish the piece to exact specifications before it made the trip east to campus for installation.
The Result
A permanent piece of custom stonework on WSU’s Pullman campus, proof that our fabrication shop’s precision translates well beyond the kitchen.
